3 similarities about iPhones and being Christians

There's no escaping them. The addiction is real. Our lives revolve around them. Lost and hopeless is how we feel without them. How did the world function before they were created? Everywhere we go they come with us. I’m talking about our iPhones.

Steve Jobs in his brilliance changed the world with the iPhone. Who would of thought pretty much everything we need could fit into a small phone? Maps, music, camera, email, calendar, games, books, videos, apps, messaging and don’t forget good old phone calls all in one device. Our world runs off these devices.

If I’m honest with you when my iPhone runs out of battery or I forget my phone I feel a little stranded! Who's trying to contact me? What did my friends have for lunch (I can’t use instagram)? What's happening in the world? Are all very real thoughts and questions I ask when I don’t have my iPhone on me. As I’m writing this blog my phone is on 22% of battery and I have to be honest with you, I’m feeling a little anxious as I don’t have a phone charger on me. How will I survive without my phone charged?

We all love our iPhones and they are awesome. But I think it’s important that we don’t let a good thing become a bad thing. View it as a tool and not as your life. The world keeps going even if you don’t have your iPhone on you, surprise surprise. They are a huge part in our lives though.

I’m going to share something with you that may be a little to much information for our relationship… is that ok? By the way you should subscribe to this blog so we can be friends and keep in touch, anyway, back to my story.

Well the other day I went to the bathroom to do my business and while I was in there taking care of business. I whipped out my phone to kill some time… I know to much detail I’m sorry, but I’m trying to prove a point here. As I was using my phone I had this moment. Do you ever have moments? Well I just thought to myself, “How ridiculous is this, I can’t even live without my phone while I’m in the bathroom.” As I sat there I began to realise that there is actually a lot we can learn from our iPhones in relation to following Jesus.

Keep checking in!

If we have a spare moment at all during the day, we check in on the world with our precious iPhones. We refresh Instagram, watch snapchat stories, read some emails and look at the news. Consistently we are checking our iPhones and our notifications.

Imagine if we were as intentional about “checking in” with Jesus during our days, as we are with our iPhones. We priorities our iPhones yet often neglect to spend time with Jesus. Our lives don’t have to be full of four hour big prayer meetings. Do life with Him, when driving to work pray, at lunch time at school reflect upon how good He is and be mindful of Him throughout your day. Keep checking in with Him.

This week try to intentionally check in with Him. Next time you go to pull out your iPhone to see what is happening in the world, put it away and take a moment to thank God for all that He has done in your life.

Include Him in everything.

Our iPhones come with us pretty much everywhere, church, work, school, holidays, dinner, dates and yes even the bathroom! There is no leaving the house without our iPhones. They appear at the dinner table, when we are out with friends and come with us for most activities we do. A few days ago I was riding my bike and got my phone out to record something on Snapchat, like who does that?! haha (Btw follow me on snapchat you won’t regret it “joshbull01” - no shame!) My point is we include our iPhones in everything.

Imagine if we included Jesus in everything that we do. For a lot of people I think they view their relationship with Jesus as something they do on a Sunday or Friday night while at Youth. Friend do you realise that Jesus wants to be included in the very little details of your life? Often we think that God is only interested in the big stuff in our lives. He is interested in that but also wants you to know that He is with you in the mundane moments of life too.

So be aware of the fact that Jesus is with you when you are up really late at night doing an assignment, hanging out the washing, cleaning the kitchen or cooking dinner. Enjoy the every day moments with Him. God wants relationship and to be included in every part of our lives. So tonight when you are studying, cooking and watching Netflix be reminded that He is with you.

Keep charging your relationship with Him.

I usually carry an iPhone charger with me everywhere I go to make sure I have charge on my phone. At night time I plug my iPhone in to charge over night ready for the next day. I’m intentional about charging my iPhone .

Our relationship with Jesus needs to be charged. Spending time in daily devotion is necessary, taking time to read the Bible and pray is necessary. If i feel anxious or worried in my life, I often ask myself the question, “Have I been reading my bible and spending intentional time with Jesus?” Let’s keep drawing near to Him and growing in our relationship with Him.

Don’t wait until Sunday to spend time with Him, do life with Him!
